Part of the United Kingdom LEI knowledge hub — back to the United Kingdom pillar.
UK banks use Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) numbers to support corporate-customer identification during KYC and onboarding and to identify legal entities in relevant transaction, prudential and regulatory reporting. A current LEI can reduce additional identity checks, while a lapsed record may require further verification.
When a UK bank onboards a corporate customer or enters a reportable financial transaction, an LEI can help confirm the entity’s legal name, registered address, status and parent relationships through the Global LEI Index.
LEIs are used in KYC and onboarding support, UK MiFIR transaction reporting, relevant PRA and Bank of England returns, and counterparty-identification processes. They can also be cross-referenced with BICs through the GLEIF and SWIFT BIC-to-LEI mapping.
A UK Bank without a valid LEI may experience slower bank onboarding and additional identity verification steps. A clean LEI clears the identity step immediately.
A UK corporate customer may be asked for an LEI when its bank or investment firm needs to identify it in a reportable transaction or another relevant financial process.
